Snorkeling

Beginers Guide to Snorkeling

One of the best summertime activities is snorkeling. It allows you the freedom to swim right next to the wild fish, without the expense of SCUBA diving training and equipment. All of the basic gear for snorkeling is relatively cheap and easy to use. Once you get the feeling of breathing underwater the experience is truly amazing. Here I will outline some of the basics for snorkeling this summer.

1. Get Your Gear

You can rent or buy your gear. You will need a mask and snorkel, swim shoes, fins, and possibly a life jacket. The mask and snorkel are pretty self-explanatory. Make sure your mask fits your face well otherwise you will have leaks. A good way to test your mask is by pressing it tight against your face as if you were warring it without the head strap. If the suction it good and the mask stays on then it fits correctly.

The swim shoes go on before your fins so you don’t develop blisters. You want both to fit snugly, but not so tight so they are uncomfortable to wear. The life vest allows you to float nicely and not have to struggle to stay afloat for to long. If you are a confident swimmer then you probably wont need a vest, this allows for more freedom to dive under water and explore more.

2. Go to the Pool and Practice

Grab your swim shorts and gear and practice in the pool for a bit. Getting the right breathing technique takes some getting used to, but one you have it down it becomes very natural. Practicing in a pool will help to build your confidence so you will have a more enjoyable time while in the ocean.

3. Don’t forget to Apply Plenty of Sun Screen

Your back and the back of your arms get fried if not. Get the strongest SPF you can, and if you still tend to burn easily invest in some arm sleeves. They are helpful even when your driving and you have one arm sticking out the window.

4. Get Out There and Snorkel!

Hopefully you will find the sport as fun and relaxing as it can be. It offers the opportunity to view another world and get some good exercise at the same time. Enjoy and be safe!
